Military Command is the appointment and direction of Nephite armies by captains, chief captains, and commanders. As the Nephites prepared to meet the Amlicites, they appointed “captains, and higher captains, and chief captains, according to their numbers” (Alma 2:13). Zoram was “appointed chief captain over the armies of the Nephites,” and his sons Lehi and Aha accompanied him when he sought Alma’s direction for finding captives (Alma 16:5-6).
Moroni, appointed chief captain over the Nephites at age twenty-five, “took the command of all the armies of the Nephites” and “the government of their wars” (Alma 43:16-17). Moroni, Teancum, and many chief captains held a council of war concerning how to draw the Lamanites from their strongholds and retake the city of Mulek (Alma 52:19).
Lachoneus appointed chief captains over all Nephite armies “to command them at the time that the robbers should come down out of the wilderness against them”. Gidgiddoni was appointed “the great commander of all the armies of the Nephites,” and Nephites customarily chose chief captains with “the spirit of revelation and also prophecy” except in times of wickedness (3 Nephi 3:17-19).
