Layered Territorial Kingship

Layered Territorial Kingship is an arrangement in which a king ruled a people or land while another king held authority over him. The king of the Lamanites granted Amulon “that he should be a king and a ruler over his people” in Helam, but Amulon could do nothing “contrary to the will of the king of the Lamanites” (Mosiah 23:39).

Lamoni identified Antiomno as “the king of the land of Middoni,” while Lamoni’s father was king “over all the land save it were the land of Ishmael” (Alma 20:4; Alma 22:1). After Ammon sought the release of his brethren and Lamoni’s kingdom, Lamoni’s father said that his son could “retain his kingdom from this time and forever” and that he would “govern him no more” (Alma 20:26).
