Gates are entrances associated with cities, walls, gardens, and the people within them. A proclamation calls for people to “go into the gates of the nobles,” while another address commands, “Howl, O gate; cry, O city” (2 Nephi 23:2; 2 Nephi 24:31). A king questioned men who had come near a city’s walls while he and his guards were “without the gate” (Mosiah 7:10).
The sabbath command includes “thy stranger that is within thy gates” among those who were not to work (Mosiah 13:18). Nephi’s tower stood near “the garden gate by which led the highway” toward the chief market in Zarahemla (Helaman 7:10). A promise says, “I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles” (3 Nephi 22:12).
