“With a Sincere Heart, with Real Intent”
A sincere heart and real intent imply openness to truth, openness to new ideas, openness to an additional book of holy writ. Seldom if ever will a man or woman approach the Book of Mormon with a skeptical mind, with a desire to prove it false, and come away with that witness that is delivered through the sweet whisperings of the Spirit. For that matter, it may be that few of earth’s inhabitants that approach the Book of Mormon with a neutral altitude, with feelings of curiosity alone or of indifference, will gain that spiritual assurance promised to those who are sincerely and intently open to truth. To borrow a phrase from Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one should initially approach the Book of Mormon with a “willing suspension of disbelief,” with the quiet but sincere possibility in mind that it just might be true.
