Mormon concludes with his fatal vision of his people’s destruction, just as he did in the previous letter. That vision and the reality of seeing it unfold obviously weighed heavily upon him. He prays that Moroni will not be one of the slain—that Yahweh will spare Moroni’s life. It is not evident from this letter whether Mormon understands Moroni’s future mission. He has not yet received the knowledge he had at Cumorah that Moroni will survive that awful last battle. (See commentary accompanying Mormon 6:1.)
