“They Did Meet Together Oft to Partake of Bread and Wine”

Brant Gardner

This verse uses the same language (“meet together oft”) as verse 5. It is not clear whether each congregational meeting included the administration of the sacrament, but nothing precludes it. Because the Nephites had priests, these priests probably administered the sacrament by analogy with their function under the Mosaic law of administering the sacrifices. Both elders and priests could administer the sacrament (Moro. 4:1), but we should remember that these titles probably do not correspond to the same offices in the modern Church. Mormon and Moroni both use “elders” to refer to those who today would be called apostles. (See commentary accompanying Moroni 3:1.)
