“The Third and Fourth Year of Ethers Account”

Monte S. Nyman

We do not know the extent of Shared’s righteousness, but he did overthrow the wicked Coriantumr in the third year (v. 23). The fourth year war again illustrates the animal nature of men, every man fighting with his band (v. 25). Animals form into bands as they are driven by hunger, protection of their properties, or to satisfy other desires. It reminds us of the Nephites just prior to the time of Christ’s ministry in Jerusalem who divided into tribes with leaders of tribes to oppose the government (see 3 Nephi 6:30–7:14). At that time Nephi, son of Nephi, was the prophet sent by the Lord to warn the Nephites even as Ether was sent to warn the Jaredites (see 3 Nephi 7:15–20). The next two years when Coriantumr did not go to battle because of his wounds (Ether 13:31) is expounded upon in the following verses.
