“The New Jerusalem”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

As Articles of Faith 1:10 also indicates, “Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.” Other terms to describe that paradisiacal condition are “translated” or “transfigured,” all referring to a terrestrial condition (see commentary at 3 Nephi 28).

The New Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven is the city of Enoch and of Melchizedek (compare JST, Genesis 14:32–34; see also Moses 7:18–19; 7:62; Revelation 21:2, 10–27). Those translated and then resurrected people will bring also the holy sanctuary of the Lord. Enoch’s city, and Zion, and the temple are inseparably connected. “I expect that in the city of Enoch there are temples; and when Enoch and his people come back, they will come back with their city, their temples, blessings and powers.”35
