Moroni now understands that the very weaknesses in the text that he and his father have produced will become strengths to readers who will use them to come to the Lord. To a class of “learned” readers, those weaknesses will seal the book with chains of scholarship and locks of academia. In contrast, the humble will take the book directly to God, the author of truth. For them, the end result will not only be a belief in the Book of Mormon but a transformation of the soul. Faith may be bolstered by understanding how the Book of Mormon fits into a real place and a real time, but such demonstrations and arguments do not have the power to convert. Learning may remove barriers to faith. Faith removes the barriers to God.
