“Omer Was Restored Again to the Land of His Inheritance”

Brant Gardner

Omer is returned to the land as king. This is the reason that the king-list goes smoothly from Shule to Omer to Emer. There is no accounting of Akish among the kings, for he was of a different lineage. When Omer’s lineage returns to power, Akish’s reign would have been obliterated from official public record.

Even this return of the exile to the throne shows up in later Maya stelae, where Tikal’s 21st ruler, Wak Chan K’awiil appears as a returning exile to take the throne. (Simon Martin and Nikolai Grube. Chronicle of the Maya Kings and Queens. Thames and Hudson. 2000, p. 39).
