Jared kept his part of the bargain and gave Akish his daughter, as promised. His being “anointed” king is the first mention in Ether (chronologically first in the entire Book of Mormon) of a coronation rite. There are no explanatory details about whether a literal anointing occurred or whether it reflects Joseph’s Bible-influenced vocabulary. A Near Eastern king might have been anointed with olive oil, which was highly symbolic of the tree of life (itself associated with both healing and kingship), but olives were not native to the New World. However, since anointing had a symbolic rather than physical function, some other fluid could have served that ritual purpose.
