Flattery may be defined as “False praise; commendation bestowed for the purpose of gaining favor and influence, or to accomplish some purpose” (Webster, American Dictionary). President Joseph F. Smith identified flattery as one of the three great temptations facing the Latter-day Saints (see Gospel Doctrine, 312). How can you protect yourself from those who practice flattery?
