The request to have a king causes great concern to the patriarchal leadership. At that point, even though this request is “grievous” to both Jared and his brother (verse 23), there is a difference of opinion concerning how to respond. The brother of Jared demurs and warns “Surely this thing leadeth into captivity” (Ether 6:23). Being a man of great vision and understanding concerning human nature, he, no doubt, sees (like the future Mosiah, son of Benjamin; see Mosiah chapter 29) the grave danger inherent in a monarchical system that could be abused by evil leaders. However, Jared acquiesces and says to his brother, “Suffer them that they may have a king” (verse 24). Thus the next generation of Jaredites is given leave to choose a king.
