The new country was, as it were, hospitably waiting for their arrival. Its virgin soil was prepared to yield its abundant wealth to the industrious husbandman.
The importance of early agriculture in this part of the world, and the success it achieved, can best be judged from the fact that the world is indebted to the Indians for a number of useful plants, such as potatoes, tomatoes, corn or maise, and others; and they knew the sedative effect of such plants as tobacco and datura, in advance of medical science.
