That Jared requested his brother to importune the Lord for all of them implies his brother’s favored status, but it also may mean that Jared recognized his brother had the birthright, that it was his brother’s right and obligation to go before the Lord on behalf of the family. Jared himself appears to be a righteous man, receiving a premonition that the Lord might be intending to take them away and carry them forth “into a land which is choice above all the earth.” If that is the case, Jared exclaimed, “Let us be faithful unto the Lord, that we may receive it for our inheritance.” Notice that Jared’s concern also extended to their friends, as other righteous men have demonstrated (for example, Enos 1:9).
