Moroni has given his own testimony and examples from the plates of brass (creation), and from the acts and teachings of Jesus and his Apostles that miracles have not ceased. Therefore, Moroni’s questions concerning who can stand against him, deny his sayings, or despise the Lord’s work are sustained in the mouths of several witnesses (v. 26). He follows with several admonitions that will bring miracles into the lives of the readers. While these admonitions are self-explanatory, it is noteworthy that some of them reflect New Testament teachings. To “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling before [Christ]” (v. 27) is the exact wording of Paul in writing to the Philippians (see Philippians 2:12). “Ask not, that ye may consume it on your lusts” (Mormon 9:28) is almost the same wording as in the Apostle James’ writings (see James 4:3). The warning to “partake not of the sacrament unworthily” (Mormon 9:29) is very close to the wording of Paul’s writing to the Corinthians (see 1 Corinthians 11:27). Was Moroni quoting from Jesus’ teachings to the Nephites that were not recorded (see 3 Nephi 26:6)? Were the New Testament Apostles also using the words of Jesus that were not recorded (see John 21:25)? Another possibility is that these phrases were used in the Old Testament and were on the plates of brass but were not in the manuscripts from which the present-day Old Testament were translated because of the loss of plain and precious parts (see 1 Nephi 13:26–29). We will know the answers to these questions after more records are restored (see 3 Nephi 26:9–11; 1 Nephi 5:18–19; Alma 37:4–5). In the meantime, may we follow the admonitions given by Moroni and in the New Testament.
