“Ye Wicked and Perverse and Stiffnecked People”

Brant Gardner

Joseph used language in translating this verse that highlights problems of his own day. Certainly he understood Moroni’s mistrust of materialistic religion which, in the Book of Mormon, was associated with the religious movement that Mormon labeled Nehorism. (See “Excursus: Religion of the Nehors,” following Alma 1.) In the latter days, it is called priestcraft, which promises spiritual benefits for money. Conceptually, both terms represent the same problem; but the language is certainly Joseph Smith’s, as there was no money in Moroni’s world.
