Moroni wrote specifically to us in the last days. He saw our time, and he described it with perfect accuracy. “Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing” (emphasis added). He made a list of conditions—the sicknesses of society—in the final dispensation when the Book of Mormon would come forth and the gospel would be restored. Nephi saw all this, too (compare 2 Nephi 28).
1. People will say that “miracles are done away.”
2. Secret combinations, such as gangs, drug cartels, mafia, terrorist groups, etc., and works of darkness will prevail.
3. “The power of God shall be denied” (compare 2 Nephi 26:20).
4. Churches will be defiled and lifted up in pride.
5. Leaders and teachers of churches will envy even their own church members.
6. Fires, tempests, and vapors of smoke will be reported in foreign lands.
7. Wars, rumors of wars, and earthquakes will be reported in various places.
8. Great pollutions will abound; for example: pollutions of the lungs (contaminated air of large cities, smoking); pollutions of the stomach (poor diet, many unhealthy foods); pollutions of the nerves (hard rock music, drugs); and pollutions of the heart and mind (pornography, immoral and violent movies and television shows).
9. Murders, robbing, lying, and sexual sins will be rampant.
10. Lax attitudes about God’s commandments and permissiveness—for example, “don’t worry about it; God will go along with it” will be pervasive.
11. Churches will offer forgiveness of sins for money.
12. Churches will be built up for personal aggrandizement and gain.
13. Holy words of God, the scriptures, will be changed and corrupted.
14. Excesses in fine apparel, envy, strife, malice, persecution, and pride will be evident everywhere.
15. People will manifest greater love of money, worldly things, and adorning of churches than love for the poor and needy.
16. Some will be ashamed to take upon them the name of Christ, preferring the praise of the world.
17. The hungry, needy, naked, and sick will be ignored and neglected.
