Moroni continues to address Joseph Smith’s proximate audience, quoting probably the most common doubt concerning the plates: Show them to me. Moroni makes it clear that the Lord has forbidden this concession to materialism. The person who insists on seeing the physical plates “shall be smitten.” Specific exceptions were made for the three and eight witnesses, a directive Moroni gave Joseph in Ether 5:1–4.
