“I Will Write and Hide Up the Records in the Earth”

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

Complying with the instructions Moroni had received from his father, he commenced the work of finishing the Record Mormon had made. At length, not only did he consummate the work he had been assigned, but for its safety he decided to hide the Record in the earth.

In the fifth verse, Moroni notes that his father had included in the Record he was making the intent for which he wrote. (See, Mormon 7:9) If there had been more space upon the Plates to write, Moroni informs us that he, too, would write his own purpose. However, that he was forced to forego. The intent, or purpose of both father and son was that in any future development, their testimony concerning God's wonderful ways in dealing with the former inhabitants of this Promised Land might be made known to some future generations of their descendants. But, he says that he has no "ore" to make additional plates, therefore the intent expressed by Mormon would also give vent to the satisfaction of his own desires.
