These verses are both pathetic and heart-rending. in them we get a glimpse into the soul of a great man, Moroni, but also become privy to some of the most tender and painful moments and reflections of his life. He has witnessed fratricide on a grand scale. He has seen the decimation of the Nephites, has anguished over the fall of a major civilization. He is alone. He is without hope in mortal matters but still full of that hope which burns brightly in the bosom of one who knows in whom he trusts.
