What is the significance of the hill Shim?

Thomas R. Valletta

The “hill Shim” played an important part in Nephite religious history. It was here that Ammaron, “constrained by the Holy Ghost,” hid up the sacred Nephite records for safekeeping during a time of “exceeding wickedness” (4 Nephi 1:45–49). Later, Ammaron “instructed young Mormon that when he turned twenty-four he should take from these records the plates of Nephi and continue the record (Morm. 1:2–4)” (Largey, Book of Mormon Reference Companion, 721–22). Mormon fulfilled this wish (see Mormon 2:17–18), but eventually removed all the records as the Lamanites drew near.
