Why did the Lord call Mormon at such a young age?

Thomas R. Valletta

What was going on in Nephite society that such a young prophet was necessary? Elder Jeffrey R. Holland observed: “The maturing Mormon, by then fifteen years of age, stood beyond the sinfulness around him and rose above the despair of his time. Consequently, he ‘was visited of the Lord, and tasted and knew of the goodness of Jesus,’ trying valiantly to preach to his people” (Christ and the New Covenant, 318). How might some younger people be less set in the traditions of their day? Why does the Lord often choose “the weak things of the world” (D&C 1:19) to accomplish his purpose? Might this help explain why He calls such young people to serve full-time missions?
