Two of the biggest reasons why population explosions remain in check are warfare and disease. Among the Nephites and Lamanites, the former was particularly limiting. After Christ's ministry, the warfare and disease were both removed, for there was no contention (v. 13) and the disciples did heal the sick (v. 5). The result was a population explosion that would have easily replaced the many slain for their wickedness (3 Nephi 8-9).
