Mormon closes his masterful treatment of the visit of the Redeemer in the New World and articulates the message of Christ for the Gentiles: hearken, repent, and come unto Him. It will be among the Gentiles that the Book of Mormon first appears, some one thousand eight hundred years in the future. Mormon reveals to his future readers what the Savior would have them do to demonstrate their repentance and willingness to embark upon the path of salvation: be baptized for a remission of their sins and be filled with the Holy Ghost, thus qualifying them to be counted among the house of Israel. In other words, they are to live according to the fulness of the gospel covenant so beautifully explained in the Book of Mormon, especially in 3 Nephi—in the words of the Savior personally. “Therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am” (3 Nephi 27:27).
