To make game of the Jews, or as Mormon says, "Any of the remnant of the House of Israel," is to subject them to sport or to ridicule them. In ridiculing the Jews, God's purposes are also ridiculed. The Lord has given them a great part in furthering the Plan of Salvation, and the Jews with gladness will perform everything their prophets have said they would.
In days now past, (thank Almighty God they are), Jews were thought to be the natural prey of Christian people. And even today, they are the target of raucous gibes, or prejudice and intolerance. The world is guilty of downright ignorance in its anti-Semitic aggressions, of having insufficient knowledge concerning them, and an unreasonable predilection of what is right and what is wrong in dealing with them. What is still more offensive to the humble follower of Jesus is that in persecuting the Jews, open rebellion is carried on in defiance of God and His laws. They are made to appear as something to be spurned and despised; a hiss and a byword among the nations of the earth. For ages persecution has been their lot. Great nations have openly sought their martyrdom. But in spite of great and powerful enemies, the Jews, today, after two thousand years of censure and unjust treatment, remain with us a magnificent source of unbounded energy, and also a reminder to all "That the Lord He is God in Heaven above, and upon the Earth beneath: there is none else." (Deuteronomy 4:39) Through the Jews, mankind has inherited knowledge of the True and Living God, and that alone should make us love and not hate them.
In all our contemplation of the Jews, let us remember that the Jews have given to the world much that is most noble and fine; much to advance the science of medicine, mathematics, and all forms of discovery. Music and the arts have benefited greatly by their contributions, and we will not forget the great moral and intellectual ethics to which they as a people have attained.
A full and complete answer to all appeals that are made to passion and prejudice in our rendering of judgment on the Jews, let us consider that they are truly the Chosen People of ,the Lord, and too, the Savior and the Redeemer of the world is a Jew.
"And now comes an event in the history of the Church that causes the most intensive faith in the work of the Lord in this day. The Prophet Joseph Smith sent Apostle Orson Hyde to the Holy Land in 1841, where he dedicated that Land for the return of the Children of Judah. The prayer was prophetic in every way. Beautiful are the words of Orson Hyde as he prayed to God that the Holy Land of the Jews should be saved. I give only a few words of the prayer:
Now, O Lord! Thy servant has been obedient to the heavenly vision which Thou gavest him in his native land; and under the shadow of Thine outstretched arm, he has safely arrived in this place to dedicate and consecrate this land unto Thee, for the gathering together of Judah's scattered remnants, according to the predictions of the holy Prophets-for the building up of Jerusalem again after it has been trodden down by the Gentiles so long, and for rearing a Temple in honor of Thy name....
Grant therefore, O Lord, in the name of Thy well-beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to remove the barrenness and sterility of this land, and let springs of living water break forth to water its thirsty soil. Let the vine and olive produce in their strength, and the fig-tree bloom and flourish. Let the land become abundantly fruitful when possessed by its rightful heirs; let it again flow with plenty to feed the returning prodigals who come home with a spirit of grace and supplication; upon it let the clouds distil virtue and richness, and let the fields smile with plenty. Let the flocks and the herds greatly increase and multiply upon the mountains and the hills; and let Thy great kindness conquer and subdue the unbelief of Thy people. Do Thou take from them their stony heart, and give them a heart of flesh; and may the Sun of Thy favor dispel the cold mists of darkness which have beclouded their atmosphere. Incline them to gather in upon this land according to Thy word. Let them come like clouds and like doves to their windows. Let the large ships of the nations bring them from the distant isles; and let kings become their nursing fathers, and queens with motherly fondness wipe the tear of sorrow from their eye.
