Here scribe 2 of 𝓟 wrote “the works of man” when he copied the text from 𝓞 into 𝓟. This reading will work here, but then so will “the works of men”, the 1830 reading. When Oliver Cowdery proofed 𝓟 against 𝓞, he restored the plural men, the undoubted reading in 𝓞. The critical text will maintain the use of the plural men in this phrase. (There are no other instances in the Book of Mormon text of either the phrase “works of men” or “works of man”.)
