“I Will Spare Them as a Man Spareth His Own Son That Serveth Him”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Some will complain: “Trying to serve God in this world is all in vain; what good has it done us to keep his ordinances and walk soberly before him? The wicked seem to prosper and the righteous just continue to suffer.” But their reward is coming. The Lord remonstrates: A book of remembrance is being kept, and the ones who have “thought upon [my] name” will be included in it, “and they shall be mine … in that day when I make up my jewels” (also D&C 60:4). The English word jewels is in Hebrew segulla, and it is the same term elsewhere translated as “peculiar,” as in “peculiar people” (Deuteronomy 14:2). Segulla means “valued property” or “peculiar treasure.” Indeed, the Saints, or holy ones of God, are his jewels, his valued property or treasure. When he comes to reign, they, his jewels or special property, will be with him.
