“The barren woman seems to be Israel, who had not previously borne the promised fruit of her covenant with God. She has never travailed with child but will rejoice to have children (meaning the blessings of the covenant) as a result of another’s travail, that of Christ” (Parry et al., Understanding Isaiah, 480). Elder Jeffrey R. Holland taught: “Even though there has been barrenness and sometimes unfaithfulness, yet will the husband (Christ) reclaim and redeem his bride (Israel). The imagery of Jehovah as bridegroom and Israel as bride is among the most commonly used metaphors in scripture, being used by the Lord and his prophets to describe the relationship between Deity and the children of the covenant” (Christ and the New Covenant, 290).
