Published in 1830, the Book of Mormon narrative is similar to that of other ancient manuscripts that were unknown in Joseph Smith’s day. For example, the “forty-day” literature—some of the most ancient Christian documents—claims to comprise Jesus Christ’s teachings to His disciples after His Resurrection. According to Hugh Nibley, these documents contain information similar to that given in 3 Nephi, where we read of Christ’s instructions to His disciples on the American continent.
