“I Am the Light”

Brant Gardner

Rhetoric: The reference here is to Jesus’s prayers in their midst. However, it refers more specifically to the model of the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus concludes this admonition: “I am the light; I have set an example for you.”

Jesus has been reinforcing his earlier sermon by intentionally quoting selected allusions. They signal that the referent of “light” in also in the sermon:

Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the light of this people.
A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house. (3 Ne. 12:14–15)

In the original sermon, Jesus admonished his followers to be lights to the world. At this point, Jesus is the light and model. As we follow him, then we can be the light and model to the world.
