The sacramental rite occurs in an assembly of believers. Its emblems are to be administered “to those who repent and are baptized in my name.” It becomes a renewal covenant. When Jesus declares his gospel, its core is repentance and baptism. Therefore, when the covenants are renewed, the essential covenants must also be repentance and baptism. In that process we affirm the path of the gospel (see “Excursus: The Principle of Repentance,” following this chapter).
