As we give we should always remember to have pure motives and a charitable purpose, giving glory to God for the opportunity to serve—and not to be seen of men. It is not the display but rather the service itself that matters. “We usually think of balancing our discipleship in words and deeds by stressing more doing and less talking. We are to be ‘doers of the word,’ lest we be hypocrites. Spiritual symmetry requires, however, that ‘doers’ also be willing to be declarative, as was valiant Stephen [Acts 6 and 7]” (Neal A. Maxwell, Even As I Am, 97; Cory H. Maxwell, ed., The Neal A. Maxwell Quote Book [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1997], 90).
