Following these directions on interpersonal relationships would convert Jesus’s listeners into “children of your Father who is in heaven,” suggesting that they currently are not. The promise is, however, that they will become such children as they learn to include others. Jesus explains: “for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good.” The Father makes no distinctions; therefore we should also make no distinctions among persons if we are truly his children. As part of his family, we must see others from his perspective.
