In the old law was a commandment not to “forswear thyself” but follow through on all oaths to the Lord (Leviticus 19:12; Numbers 30:2; Deuteronomy 23:21). Not to “forswear thyself” means not to break your oath or perjure yourself (Matthew 5:33, footnote a). The higher law advised against swearing by heaven, or by the earth, or by our head, and so on. It is best to keep our communication plain and simple. Oaths, vows, and covenants of eternal import are made between a person and the Father or the Lord, in sacred ways and in sacred places.
