Knowing and keeping the commandments becomes the pathway to obtaining a broken heart and a contrite spirit, which the Lord requires as our sacrifice under the new covenant of gospel living. “May the Lord give us the power so to live that we may have the blessings which he has promised; may he give us, to each of us, the broken heart and the contrite spirit; may we turn to Jesus the Christ, the Author of our salvation, our Elder Brother; may we worship him in spirit and in truth; may we approach our Heavenly Father through him, that his blessings may be ours” (J. Reuben Clark, Jr., Behold the Lamb of God [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1991], 221). We are to be perfect, even as the Father and the Son are perfect. This process of perfection comes by living the Lord’s word—both inwardly through a broken heart and a contrite spirit, as well as outwardly through a godly walk and conversation (see D&C 20:69). Such is the nature of true discipleship.
