The Book of Mormon omits the “you” in “persecute you.” “You” is italicized in the King James text, its removal creating another example in which a change occurred at an italicized word. (See commentary accompanying 2 Nephi 8:18–19.) In this case, the sentence can be understood without it, and so it is removed and not replaced.
A second set of changes comes from verb tenses. “For ye shall have great joy… shall be” in 3 Nephi replaces “Rejoice… is,” a shift from present to future tense. Of course, the beatitude was pronouncing a future blessing, and Joseph Smith arguably made this alteration in contrast to the apparent present tense and therefore “current” promise of the King James Version. Joseph apparently did not understand that many languages use the present tense with future meanings. (See commentary accompanying Jacob 4:13 for a discussion of the “prophetic present.”) Joseph Smith thus “corrected” a text that was archaic but still technically correct.
