“Sacrifices and Burnt Offerings Shall Be Done Away”

Brant Gardner

Because the versification was developed for the text in the 1879 edition, I suggest that “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end” belongs with this verse in the following reading: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood; yea, your sacrifices and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your burnt offerings.”

Yahweh-Messiah, as the personification of the beginning and the end, thus explains why Mosaic sacrifices have ended. He is the creator and the ultimate giver of the law; therefore, he can fulfill (end) the law. This statement is remarkably direct. When Paul tries to explain how the Savior has eliminated the necessity of the annual atonement sacrifice, he requires nearly two chapters (Heb. 9–10:14).
