Some of the most powerful spiritual manifestations in the Book of Mormon that accompanied gospel preaching occurred during this time. Mormon has told us of powerful preaching and the miraculous protection of missionaries, but the healings he records are unique in the record. There is no other instance of raising someone from the dead, and probably there were never such obvious manifestations of the Spirit as at this time. Yet the people still did not believe.
Variant: In the printer’s manuscript and the 1830 edition, verse 23 began: “And it came to pass that.… ” This introductory phrase was removed in the corrected printer’s manuscript and all editions since 1837.
