The Gadiantons have amassed a large army that has an element of desperation in it. Their supply line is overextended, and their best access to food is behind the fortifications of the Nephites. The Nephites, on the other hand, are equally desperate. They have executed a very desperate and difficult maneuver in relocating large numbers of people and supplies to a central location. The battle is fierce. It is probably an indication of the strength of the Gadianton army that the battle was so fierce, as it is much more difficult to attack fortified positions.
