“Book of Mormon prophets stressed again and again that hardened hearts are simply unable to perceive and then receive the quiet whisperings of the Spirit (see 2 Nephi 33:2; Alma 13:4; 40:13). In time, what love they do have will be lost, and their crudeness will be transformed and translated into perversion and murder. They shall become like the Nephites who, within four centuries after the coming of Christ, were described by Mormon as being ‘without civilization’ … (Moroni 9:11, 18, 20). ‘For the Spirit of the Lord will not always strive with man. And when the Spirit ceaseth to strive with man then cometh speedy destruction’ (2 Nephi 26:11; compare Helaman 13:8; Ether 2:15)” (Millet, Power of the Word, 241).
