The preaching of Samuel the Lamanite for many days, and then being cast out, is almost a duplicate experience of Alma going to the city of Ammonihah (see Alma 8:13). However, this time it is a Lamanite instead of a Nephite (Helaman 13:2). An angel appeared to Alma (Alma 8:14), but the voice of the Lord came to Samuel. Alma entered the city of Ammonihah by another way (Alma 8:18), and Samuel climbed on the wall to preach (Helaman 13:4). Being on the wall was probably to attract attention to him. While Samuel prophesied whatsoever things the Lord put into his heart (v. 4), he later gave four reasons why he came upon the wall: (1) that they might know the judgments of God that awaited them because of their iniquities; (2) that they might know the conditions of repentance; (3) that they might know of the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of heaven and earth, the Creator of all things from the beginning; and (4) that they might know of the signs of his coming, to the intent they might believe on his name (Helaman 14:11–12). These four reasons for his coming upon the wall will be treated in the order that he speaks about them, which is in a slightly different order than he listed them.
