Nephi’s prayer continues. The famine has achieved its goal of stopping the civil war and removing the Gadiantons from power. Because Yahweh has bestowed the sealing power upon Nephi, his prayer will certainly be answered. I hypothesize that Nephi made this prayer in public to provide a public rescue from the national plight. Just as Nephi had publicly accused Seantum of murdering his brother and thereby solidified his reputation as a prophet, so ending the drought by a public petition would confirm Nephi’s prophethood and focus attention on Nephi’s true God. Some had suggested that Nephi was a god (Hel. 9:41). By this public prayer, Nephi affirms Yahweh’s preeminence and directs the people’s worship to him.
