Another miracle occurs, and Nephi cannot be thrown into prison. It still is not sufficient to change the hearts of the majority. There were, of course, some who did believe, and the contention between those two types of people led to violence: “[They] began to slay one another with the sword.”
Rather than repent and return to prosperity, the people allow themselves to descend into a civil war.
