What accusation were the judges making against Nephi in their declaration that he was “confederate”?

Thomas R. Valletta

According to Webster’s 1828 dictionary, to be confederate is to be “united in a league; allied by treaty” (American Dictionary). Here, Nephi’s accusers suggest he is one of them, given to secret oaths and works of darkness. Their own darkness is evident when they offer him money and promise not to prosecute him if he will just tell them who killed the chief judge.
