How were the evil judges trying to use Nephi’s words against him?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Mormon was … conscious of plainness in his writings. At least three times he mentioned the attempts of antagonists to ‘cross’ the prophets in their words (Mosiah 12:19; Alma 10:16; and Hel. 9:19). To ensure that no one misunderstand the image of ‘crossing,’ Mormon added a definitive explanation of the word: ‘it came to pass that they began to question Amulek, that thereby they might make him cross his words, or contradict the words which he should speak’ (Alma 10:16; emphasis added)” (Ogden, “As Plain as Words Can Be,” 165).
