“Yea Did He Not Bear Record That the Son of God Should Come”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Here is one of the best passages in all of scripture on proving Christ. This later Nephi, along with all other prophets, rejoiced in the coming of Christ and delighted to show the evidence of his imminent mission and ministry.

The original Nephi (who left Jerusalem in the year 600 B.C.) wrote: “Behold, my soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ… . God sendeth more witnesses, and he proveth all his words” (2 Nephi 11:4, 3). As with these Nephis and with the New Testament–period apostle Matthew (see Matthew 1–2), we also delight in proving the coming of Christ. “Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?” it was asked. The answer was “Come and see” (John 1:46).

Alma and Amulek proved that “the word is in Christ unto salvation”; they called on the words of Zenos, Zenock, and Moses “to prove that these things are true” (Alma 34:6–7). Nephi and Lehi wrote about “the greatness of the evidences” (Helaman 5:50). Here this later Nephi gave us the most detailed list of those who testified of the coming of the Son of God: Moses, Abraham, Zenos, Zenock, Ezias, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lehi and Nephi, “and almost all of our fathers … have testified of the coming of Christ.” We have, indeed, received “so many evidences.”
