We see how powerful but corrupt men in high places can and do incite others to rebel against prophets and principles of righteousness. We note the self-serving argument of Nephi’s opponents: We are too powerful and our cities too great to stand in any real danger; it is you, Nephi, who has the problem. This is the same argument used by Laman and Lemuel when they were told Jerusalem was in big trouble. It seems axiomatic that thoroughgoing wickedness almost always brings a false sense of security (2 Nephi 28:20–22).
