Text: The awkwardness that frequently comes from the modern chapter divisions is conspicuous in this verse. In beginning the new chapter, it obscures the illuminating context. The judges (Gadiantons) become angry, but the reason is in the previous chapter. Nephi has accused the Gadiantons of causing the coming Nephite downfall (Hel. 7:25). Of course, the Gadianton judges would take offense at Nephi’s audacity. This section belongs with, and should be read as part of, the events in chapter 7.
These Gadiantons are judges because their political party is in control and represents the majority. In other words, Nephi is attacking the government. The crime he is committing is treason because he is encouraging rebellion against the rulers placed in power by the voice of the people.
