The heart is the source of our decisions, the center of our very being, and the focus of our affections. When our hearts are hardened, we seek to be praised of men, covet riches, and aspire to the vain things of the world. We become full of pride (see Helaman 7:26). Our values and standards become blurred, and we commit all manner of sins to acquire the so-called riches of the world (see Helaman 7:21). We forget the goodness and mercy of God whenever we put the things of the world first—power, fame, fortune, vanity, being lifted above another. And this can lead to even more deadly sins.
